Nunapitchuk, AK – AVCP Regional Housing Authority (RHA) administration recently visited Nunapitchuk by boat to provide an update on the services offered and review the progress of three new homes under construction. Two of these homes are part of the homebuyer program, while the third is a rebuild for a homebuyer whose house was destroyed by fire.
During the visit, AVCP-RHA observed key challenges faced by the region, particularly erosion, permafrost degradation, and the effects of climate change on the community’s land. These foundational issues have become increasingly problematic in the Y-K Delta, especially in Nunapitchuk, and they continue to impact housing stability.
AVCP-RHA welcomed valuable feedback from the residents of Nunapitchuk on ways to improve future housing infrastructure and ensure longer-lasting homes in these harsh conditions. The resilience of the Nunapitchuk community stood out, and AVCP-RHA is deeply grateful for their hospitality and insights. Together, with strong collaboration, we aim to strengthen current and future housing projects, adapting to the unique challenges posed by the changing environment. This visit reaffirmed the importance of working closely with communities to provide housing solutions that are not only safe and affordable but also resilient to the impacts of climate change. We look forward to continuing our work with Nunapitchuk and other communities across the Y-K Delta to address these issues and create sustainable housing for future generations.
